The opening stage of the Tour of Guangxi took place today in the streets of Beihai. The stage was the shortest of the week, with only 107.4 kilometres on the menu. The course consisted of two big local laps through the city and each of them featured the ascent of a third category climb: Guantou Hill. The last passage at the top however was situated too early into the race to prevent a bunch sprint. Cavagna, Dillier, Dougall and Grivko broke away as soon as the flag dropped but due to the short distance of the stage, their advantage never exceeded one minute. Cavagna let his fellow escapees behind in the last 30 kilometres and was later joined by Lastra, but the duo was eventually reeled in with four kilometres to go. The stage ended, as expected, in a bunch sprint, which was won by Fernando Gaviria. Groenewegen and Ackermann finished second and third respectively. Moreno Hofland came home in tenth position.
