Bjorg Lambrecht fourth in Flèche Wallonne
Another impressive performance by the 22-year-old Lotto Soudal rider.
Today the final stage was covered in the Itzulia Basque Country. After five stages, Bjorg Lambrecht was thirteenth in the general classification, but after a tough day the young Lotto Soudal rider eventually finished nineteenth. The stage victory in Eibar went to Adam Yates, who attacked with Ion Izagirre, Jakob Fuglsang, Dan Martin and Tadej Pogačar, and beat them in the sprint at the end. After a long chase, leader Emanuel Buchmann had to cede the overall victory to Ion Izagirre.
Bjorg Lambrecht: “Just like yesterday, it was a really tough stage. As we expected, there was a high pace right from the start. On the second climb of the day Astana pulled very hard. I felt my back aching again, which unfortunately prevented me from keeping up with the others. Afterwards we were able to return, but two climbs further, I was forced to let go again. I had to find my own pace in a chasing group. Halfway through the race my back felt a lot better. I was able to ride higher watts again, although the damage had already largely been done.”
“My shape certainly is superb and I want to continue improving this towards the Walloon Classics. I am satisfied with my performances in this Tour of the Basque Country, however I think more would have been possible without the backache. I have achieved my first podium spot in a WorldTour race, besides some other fine results. So I certainly cannot complain about that. On the climbs I felt a lot stronger than I was in Catalonia and the races before. With this shape, I hope I can help the team well in the Ardennes Classics. Tim Wellens and Jelle Vanendert will be our leaders there. I want to give the best I have for them.”
