Tim Wellens is a product of the U23 team and turned pro at Lotto Soudal in 2012. During his first years as a pro, Wellens showed his exceptional talent by obtaining several top 10 places in the Tour Down Under and the Tour de Wallonie. In his first Grand Tour, the Giro d’Italia of 2014, he was already close to his first pro victory by finishing two times second. In August that same year, Tim could celebrate his first pro victory: he finished solo on La Redoute during the sixth stage of the Eneco Tour. He would also win the GC. He could repeat this performance the following year as he secured his second overall victory in the Eneco Tour by winning a stage in Houffalize. During the sixth stage of the Giro 2016, he slipped into the breakaway and soloed to victory on Roccaraso. That year, the puncher also won the seventh stage of Paris-Nice and he took a stage and the overall victory in the Tour de Pologne. In 2018, Tim began his season by winning a stage and the overall in the Ruta del Sol. He proved his excellent shape once again in the Brabantse Pijl, where he soloed to victory, with teammate Tiesj Benoot finishing in third place. That year, Tim took his second Giro stage win of his career after beating his rivals during an uphill sprint in Caltagirone.
