Lotte Kopecky about her track season
The Track World Cup season has come to an end and it’s less than three weeks till the start of the Track World Championships in Poland (27 February – 3 March). Time to look back and to look ahead with Lotte Kopecky, who claimed gold and silver in the madison at the last two World Cups in January, together with Jolien D’hoore.
Lotte Kopecky: “I can look back on the Track World Cup season with a positive feeling. Although Jolien and I weren’t in a top shape yet at the start, we still finished third twice in the madison. In the last two World Cups we claimed gold and silver. We managed to build up our condition towards the World Championships and the first road races of the year. In the omnium I always lost important points in the scratch race, the first event. Thanks to a good elimination and tempo race I could close the gap a bit, but I eventually got seventh twice, once fourth and once fifth. We are gradually making progress with our team pursuit squad. In New-Zeeland, where we set a new Belgian record, also Jolien D’hoore was part of the team and that made the difference.”
“Tomorrow I’m heading to Spain for a team training camp with Lotto Soudal. I will be staying for six days. The day after tomorrow we are attending a race in Valencia, which I am very much looking forward to. It’s always good to get some extra confidence ahead of the Worlds. The week after the team training camp I will be training on the track in Ghent with the national team, from Monday till Friday. On Saturday 23 February we travel to Poland for the Worlds.”
“The madison with Jolien D’hoore is the main goal at the Worlds for me. The level of racing has risen quickly. We need to aim for a podium spot and if all goes well it is possible to become world champion, but a medal is the goal. For the omnium it’s difficult to predict on which place I could finish. I’m counting on a place on top eight, we’ll see which one exactly. I will also be participating in the team pursuit and the points race.”
